Making Credit Less Crunchy - UK
12 February, 19 March - Rudolf Steiner House, 35 Park Road, London, NW1 6XT
Rudolf Steiner’s Concept of Money
Rudolf Steiner is not alone, of course, in discussing the nature of money. And there are not a few writers, particularly in the early 20th century, whose views he merited and drew attention to, including Hartley Withers, (The Meaning of Money, 1909) and John Maynard Keynes. But Steiner’s view of money is in fact unique and it would be wonderful if, especially at this time in history, it could be more developed. To this end, following the symposium on 24th January, three further Economics Conference events focused on money have been organised:
Thursday, 7.30 pm, 12 February, Rudolf Steiner House, London
Making Credit less Crunchy - I: Reviewing Real Estate – the Danger of ‘Real Credit’
Thursday, 7.30 pm, 19 March, Rudolf Steiner House, London
Making Credit less Crunchy - II: Capitalising Initiative – the Need for ‘Personal Credit’

Along the way he has written many articles and books that chart his journey. Of particular relevance to this event are An Economic Testament, The Metamorphosis of Capitalism, Of Wheat and Gold, and Auditorial Central Banking, available online from cfae.biz/publications or at the event.

Melbourne, Brisbane, Australia
A series of events in Melbourne and Brisbane will be taking place between 26 October - 4 November 2007. These include the Colours of Money Seminar 26-28th October in Melbourne and 7 lecture presentations over that period with the following titles (TBC):

2 The Right On Corporation - Overcoming the For-Profit / Not-for-profit divide
3 Rudolf Steiner, Economist (in link with certain of his blackboard drawings)

5 Rare Albion and the Wizard of Oz
6 Freeing the Circling Stars - independent education as a public benefit
7 Rare Albion and the Wizard of Oz
Christopher Houghton Budd, who will be presenting the above events (and is available for case study consultancy) writes as follows of the public lectures:
Rudolf Steiner is not well-known as an economist, yet he had much to say that is perhaps only now coming to clear historical relevance. In these lectures, a wide range of modern-day problems is addressed - accounting, the role of the corporation, educational finance, and monetary policy – in ways that combine ‘big picture’ analysis with practicable hands-on, micro-level responses. Rudolf Steiner is perhaps unique among economists for his grasp of what today is called ‘the plot’, that is the point and purpose of what takes place under the heading of economic development. His view is one that does not hark back to bygone days, nor is it an apology for capitalism in its less fortunate aspects; rather, Steiner understands economics in link with the evolution of consciousness and in particular the shift from narrow or exclusive egoism to enlarged or inclusive egoism. Catching and following this inner story is the key to understanding his approach, as it is also to knowing how to relate to current events.
Whether we are adults playing the markets (either directly or through agents), individuals trying to undertake new initiatives (often without sufficient capital), young people in high school not sure what to make of the business world that informs our actions and beckons to us on all fronts, or policy makers trying to figure out what macro policy will bring real and lasting change – we would all stand to gain from understanding how economic life is a reflection of our spiritual life, especially our life of will.

TWO COMMEMORATIONS, UK
Owen Barfield and Walter Stein will both be featured in AEM this year in our survey of the beginnings of associative economics in the 1930s. Their work will also be marked with two events looking at the relevance of their work for today.
OWEN BARFIELD - 19 MAY, LONDON
On May 19th the focus will be on Owen Barfield, whose biography came out last year.* Though best known as an ‘Inkling’ and for his friendship with C S Lewis, Barfield was also the first translator of Rudolf Steiner’s economics lectures and a frequent and perceptive writer on economic matters in his own right. Towards the end of his life in the 1990s, Barfield imagined an associative approach arising quietly out of practical life, rather than through a programme of some kind.
* Owen Barfield, Romanticism comes of age. Simon Blaxland-De Lange, Temple Lodge, London.
WALTER JOHANNES STEIN - 7 JULY, STROUD
July 7th marks the 50th anniversary of Stein’s death. As a collaborator of DN Dunlop in producing World Review for the World Power Conference (now World Energy Council) and then as editor of The Present Age, Stein focused his powerful eclectic intellect on the conundrum of how, in an age of world economy, human beings would be able, without coercion, to create global rather than national thinking in approaching economic questions.

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA
Beyond our Limits - The Future of Economic Life, Sydney, Australia
13-14 April 2006
Economic life is a uniquely human creation, born of ideas implemented by the will. If we wish future economic life to be worthy of the human being then all will depend on the clarity of our ideas and the honesty of our will.
In this workshop, the aim will be to consider the deeper historical nature of so-called economic life, the esoteric significance of money, and the use of artistic media to make visual what a future economy might entail. The main medium will be chalk on black paper but in other workshops participants have also had resource to poetry, music, drama and even agit-prop!
